Abstract
Mental health concerns and the incidence of suicide are increasing worldwide, highlighting the urgent need for effective mental health promotion and intervention programs accessible to the general public. This presentation will explore the Mental Health First Response (MHFR) model, a comprehensive approach to mental health skills emphasizing health promotion, intervention, and prevention.
The MHFR model is designed for individuals seeking to acquire valuable skills in mental health promotion, suicide prevention, and intervention. It addresses mental health and suicide as critical public health issues. Participants will gain insights into current global trends in suicide intervention and prevention. Additionally, the presentation will cover recent developments in advocacy, training programs, and adaptable models that effectively reduce mental health issues and suicides, applicable across various cultural and national contexts.
This presentation will focus on the multifaceted nature of mental health issues, integrating them into the broader public health agenda. Participants will be introduced to original suicide prevention and intervention strategies and understand their global application. The presentation will also highlight innovative advocacy and training initiatives that pave the way for more flexible and responsive mental health support systems worldwide.
Attendees will learn practical strategies for intervening in mental health crises and other mental health conditions, whether they constitute a crisis situation or not. Biography
Art Tolentino, PhD, is a distinguished Clinical Director at Pathways Mental Health Services in WA State, USA. With over two decades of experience in the mental health field, Dr. Tolentino has dedicated his career to promoting mental well-being and enhancing support systems within various communities. He is a renowned expert in Mental Health First Response (MHFR) Training, employee assistance programs, and emotional and peer support. Tolentino holds a PhD in Psychology with a specialization in Family Psychology and is licensed in the US and the Philippines. He is also a chartered psychologist in the UK. Dr. Tolentino has played a pivotal role in advocating for mental health awareness and education. His extensive work includes collaborating with schools, universities, and organizations to implement comprehensive mental health programs. As the Program Developer, Tolentino focuses on developing and promoting mental health first response certification, self-referral counseling, employee peer assistance program, and psychotherapy consultation. Notably, MHFR operates in the Philippines, making Tolentino a global provider of mental health services. Recently, Tolentino launched the US Expats and Military Families Telehealth service and the Overseas Filipino workers access to mental health in the Philippines, further extending his commitment to accessible mental health care. In addition to his professional achievements, Tolentino is an active member of various mental health organizations and networks. He is committed to fostering a supportive environment for individuals facing mental health challenges and is passionate about reducing stigma and improving access to mental health resources.Tolentino's expertise, dedication, and compassionate approach have made him a respected leader in the mental health community, continually striving to create positive change and support mental well-being for all.
