Urban community welfare: The effect of air pollution on the psychological wellbeing of urban communities
Abstract
The increase in the number of people living in urban areas has brought its own set of problems, one of which is the rise in air pollution. This issue of air pollution has various impacts, ranging from physical to mental health, and reduces individuals' psychological well-being. While many studies have discussed the effects of air pollution's effects, this issue has not been widely explored in Indonesia. This study method uses a non-experimental quantitative research method, with a total of 105 subjects from various areas of Jakarta, Bekasi, and Semarang. Air quality was measured using the Air Quality Index (IQAIR), analyzing the air quality in Jakarta, Bekasi, and Semarang from September 4 to October 10, to measure psychological well-being using the psychological well-being scale. The results showed that Jakarta and Bekasi had the worst air quality, and this correlated with lower psychological well-being, particularly in aspects such as personal growth. This study demonstrates a relationship between air pollution and the quality of an individual’s psychological well-being.
