Life Outside classroom bruised my mental health A qualitative narrations by an undergraduate student, South Africa
Abstract
University life is about getting a great education, but reality is; It’s also about the overall experience non academic life not exceptional. In fact, non-academic life is the biggest part of the experience since students spend more time outside an actual classroom. Both academic and none academic life demand the students ‘mental health.
The study investigated the undergraduate nursing students’ experiences of university nonacademic life on their mental health at the rural based university in South Africa.
Methods: A qualitative approach using naïve sketch was conducted to forty-two undergraduate varsity nursing students who were purposively sampled in a rural University of South Africa. Data were thematically analysed.
Results: The analysis revealed two themes. Theme 1,student’s experience of varsity non academic activities: students’ protests a) sexual violence b) and c) Bully room mate. Theme 2, mental health experiences a) PTSD, b) Fera woories & frustrations C) Rape victims ,D) Mental health care user.
Conclusion: The qualitative students’ narratives demonstrate that varsity non academic activities compromise the mental health of some nursing students which is one of the reasons for students’ poor academic performance at the university. Further research should examine students view on the prevailing support.

Mary Maluleke is a associate professor in the faculty of health sciences, department of advanced nursing sciences, University of Venda, South Africa. Her professional qualifications are, a) registered professional and advanced psychiatric Nurse. Her highest academic qualification is PhD. She graduated over 60 postgraduate students. She serves as an external examiner of dissertations and thesis. She published 34 articles in the accredited journals. Her area of speciality is Mental health and community engagement.
