Title: The Development of Forman Emotional Regulation Scale for Young Adults

Abstract

 
The objective of this study was to construct a scale on Emotional Regulation in indigenous language; Urdu so a culturally sensitive and an appropriate scale would be used to evaluate the emotional regulating coping skills of young people. First phase of the study constituted of item generation and it consisted of two focus groups; one with clinical psychologists and the second focus group was conducted with undergraduate students as well as in-person interviews with Campus Counsellors. This data was used to generate major themes for items of scale. The preliminary item pool of 31 items was reviewed by the researcher and research supervisor. Establishing content validity was the main objective of the second phase of the study. A Five-Likert scale, with 26 items was developed and 244 adolescent students of both genders, aged 18-25, from two private and government university students were approached through Purposive Sampling.  Exploratory Factor Analysis with the help of SPSS version 25 was conducted. The Sample adequacy measure of KMO was 0.586 and Bartlett’s test of Sphericity was significant (x₂ approximately = 620.050 (p¬.000). Greater than 1 Eigen values and Factor loadings which had values greater than 0.40 were retained. Four factors were developed in accordance with theoretical relevance; Solution Focused, Internalization, Seeking Support and Externalization. The results revealed that most young adults resorted to solution focused and externalization techniques. To help students in adopting adaptive emotional regulation techniques educational programs and workshops should be conducted in educational institutes. Future studies can focus on conducting Confirmatory Analysis and employing larger sample size for better generalizability.
